In my Technology for Teachers class I created various documents to represent facts, information, and objectives.
Presentations
Presentations using power point were created to convey themes and lessons. In peer groups students researched a technology tool and used a presentation to present it to the class. Another presentation that was created in the class was a non-linear informative power point Presentations are a good way for students to reflect on a learning topic and can present their information to a group of people.
Many new and advanced technology tools have been introduced to the classroom in the last ten years. One interesting technology tool that is new to the educational field it the use of I-Pads and tablets in the classroom by teachers and for children to utilize. In my partner group, Brittny and I researched the use of I-pads and tablets in the classroom.
The use of I-pads and tablets in the classroom are a new and informative way of utilizing technology in the classroom. I-pads and tablets can be costly but is an effective method in the classroom. Using I-pads in the classroom creates an interactive and interesting environment that encourages the children to participate.
I think that all children would be interested in learning and interacting with I pads. By using I-pad applications in the classroom that connect to content area, children are going to hold more engagement and interest. I would integrate the I-pads and tablets into the classroom to create a digital environment. I think that a one to one school would be a great aspect to the classroom but feel that in today’s economical situation it is likely unrealistic.
We also researched and presented information about one to one schools. In a one to one classroom, each student has full access to a laptop or I-pad. Laptops and I-pods are now integrated in the everyday subjects throughout the school day. Technology can enhance learning and development and increases the student engagement. I-pads and one to one schools broaden and extend learning beyond the classroom.
The ISTE NETS and performance standards (2008) that digital story telling best connects to is Standard 2: "Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments" and Standard 2a: “design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity”. International Society for Technology in Education, 2008, www.iste.org). By utilizing I-pads or tablets in one to one schools, students are utilizing digital tools and. Teachers are creating a classroom that is in the digital-age.
Non-Linear power points are multidimensional informative presentations instead of the typical boring lengthy completely fact based power points Non-linear power points are interactive and informative creating a learning experience that keeps the children participated in active and fun instruction. A nonlinear power point starts out as a title slide with a topic and drives the lesson. Students can actively click on something on the title slide and it leads to a branch slide that contains various information, pictures, videos, sounds, and interactive games. A non-linear power point allows students to discover what they are interested in and explore the various aspects of a topic.
I would prefer to use nonlinear power points in the classroom to create an in depth topic and have children actively explore the various aspects of the power point Children are actively engaging and their interests are being met.
The ISTE NETS and performance standards (2008) that non linear power points connect best to is Standard 1: "Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning Creativity" and Substandard 1b: " Engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources" (International Society for Technology in Education, 2008, www.iste.org). When students are actively engaged in real world issues through non linear presentations the knowledge that they are exposed to is going to be more likely to stick and seem interesting. While exploring non-linear power points the students are exploring topics depending on what they openly choose to.
Word Processing
Word processing programs can be used by both students and teachers in so many ways. Students and teacher use word processing programs to create papers, handouts, quizzes, reports, surveys, statistics, among many other things. Word processing is used by virtually almost everyone! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Surveys are a great way to assess the interest level and other general information about children. Surveys allows the collector to gather and interpret data. Students can also create and use surveys to collect data and learn about statistics and graphs.
I would use surveys often in the classroom to asses the childrens interests in general things, and engagement and interest in what we are learning about. I would like to use surveys to assess what children know, would like to know, and already know to create and manage the classroom direction. The ISTE NETS and performance standards (2008) that teacher use of surveys connect best to is Standard 1: "Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning Creativity" and Substandard 1c: "promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students' conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes”(International Society for Technology in Education, 2008, www.iste.org). One way surveys would be used would be to promote student reflection on the tools and learning ideas introduced.
Every teacher at some point during their teaching career is going to have to make handouts, not once but many times. Handouts are used to convey information, reminders, and any thing important to the public. Handouts in the classroom can consists of important dates, newsletters, field trip notices, letters to home, invitations, and assignments. Prospective teachers need to know how to make handouts that are reader friendly to everyone. Writing in handouts should be correctly spaced, legible, organized, neat, and informative.
I would use handouts probably daily in the classroom. If the teacher did not create them then they are commercialized and it should apply to the classroom atmosphere. I would have a weekly letter home to parents to inform them what their child did in school over the week with important reminders and dates. The ISTE NETS and performance standards (2008) that teacher use of handouts connect best to is Standard 5: “Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership” and substandard 5d: “contribute to the effectiveness, vitality, and self-renewal of the teaching profession and of their school and community” (International Society for Technology in Education, 2008, www.iste.org). By sharing handouts with students, families, and colleagues teachers are engaging in professional growth in a sense.
Every teacher at some point during their teaching career is going to have to make quizzes, tests exams, and finals. Teachers need to be sure that they are including all information that was covered in the classroom, questions are stated clearly, instructions that are simple and easy to understand. Students need to know the format and your expectations prior to taking the quiz, test, exam, and final. The quizzes need to have a place for a name, points possible, instructions, time limit if necessary, and plenty of space for answers.
Quizzes, Tests, Exams, and Finals are going to be performed on any grade over first grade, students are going to be exposed to these for the rest of their life. If the teacher follows the criteria above they are creating a successful testing material. The ISTE NETS and performance standards (2008) that teacher use of word processed quizzes and tests connects best to is Standard 5: “Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership” and substandard 5d: “contribute to the effectiveness, vitality, and self-renewal of the teaching profession and of their school and community” (International Society for Technology in Education, 2008, www.iste.org). By using word processor to create quizzes and test teachers are engaging in professional development and are also utilizing technology.
In class we created a survey and this is my spreadsheet analysis of the data with the charts. See above to read about surveys. This is the spreadsheet analysis of the data and charts utilizing the statistics.
It is important for future teachers to understand how to utilize technology in the sense of using excel or a spreadsheet to create a grade book. Putting your grade book onto the computer allows for easy transportation from home to school. A virtual grade book also lessens the number of miscalculations and errors. It is important to learn about the formulas for finding averages with consideration to weight and percentages. Having the grade book online allows for easy comparison of other students grades and grades on a specific assignment. Most teachers have their grade book on their computer but some still choose to keep it in a book. Personally I think that I would probably do both. Mainly I think that I would record the grades on paper with a pencil in a grade book and convert the grades on the computer to do the mathematical solutions. Although I also think that it is important to show students their progress and what needs worked on in the classroom. By using an online public site such as blackboard, teachers can enter the grades, handouts, assignments, and any links to parents and students. Parents and students can access websites like these when they are at home or library to access information about the class they are taking.
A virtual grade book integrates technology into the teachers life to in ways make it easier and error free. Keeping your grade book on your computer shows students that computers are used in so many different ways on a daily basis. The ISTE NETS and performance standards (2008) that teacher use of the grade book on the computer connects best to Standard 3: “Model Digital-Age Work and Learning” and substandard 3c: “communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital-age media and formats” (International Society for Technology in Education, 2008, www.iste.org). By using a online grade book students and teachers can access their class materials and grades at their own convenience. It is a private and confidential way of checking the students status in the class in order to show them the requirements, details, and other important information for the class. Teachers are communication relevant information about the class to students, parents, and peers.
Differentiation with Technology Lesson
Differentiation instruction should be happening in the classroom from day one. Differentiated instruction meets the individual needs of all children. Differentiated instruction promotes a diverse learning environment that challenges all children. Teachers differentiate instruction by reviewing the big picture, what should be included for all children, and creating many activities based on one idea. Four ways to differentiate are: differentiate content, differentiate process/activities, differentiate product, and differentiate by addressing learning style. Differentiating instruction is providing multiple assignments within each unit.
I would like to utilize the project approach in my classroom. While implementing project approach teachers are differentiating instruction for all children to learn the basic concepts and themes. The theme that I focused on was the rainforest, I provided examples of Differentiating content, differentiating projects/activities, differentiating product, and differentiating by addressing learning styles. The different ways that were listed creates many fun and interactive ways for students to learn about the rainforest.
All lesson in the classroom would be based on the students different ways of learning. I want to ensure that all children are learning and not just listening and getting anything out of it. By differentiating instruction the various needs of all children are going to be met. The ISTE NETS and performance standards (2008) that differentiating instruction connects best to is Standard 2: “ Design and Develop Digital- Age Learning Experiences and Assessments” and substandard: 2b: “develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own education goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress” (International Society for Technology in Education, 2008, www.iste.org). In a classroom that uses the project approach and differentiates instruction for the students their curiosities and interests will be addressed. All children will be learning based on their comfort zone and passions. Teachers can create a more meaningful lesson when children are more interested in interacting with something that is similar to their learning style.
Students can utilize the think-tac-toe that connects to the differentiated rainforest lesson where children can choose from 3 of the activities that go diagnol, horizontally, or vertically.
